International Day of Cooperatives

On 6 July, the International Day of Cooperatives is celebrated all over the world.

The theme chosen for 2021 (CoopsDay) is COOPS 4 DECENT WORK. Cooperatives for decent work.

"Co-operatives help preserve jobs and promote decent work in all sectors of the economy. Through participation, members have a motivation to change their lives, their communities and the world" said Ariel Guarco, President of the International Cooperative Alliance (ICA).

On 6 July 2019, we celebrate a future in which human development and social justice are the priorities.

Through #CoopsDay, local, national and global policy makers, civil society organizations and the general public can learn how cooperatives contribute to a decent work environment.

Cooperative employment is not a marginal phenomenon. According to a recent estimate, cooperatives around the world employ or are the main source of income for over 279 million people, almost 10% of the total active population of humanity.

Why COOPS 4 DECENT WORK?

In view of the growing inequalities, the increase in job insecurity and the high unemployment rate, particularly among young people, the theme for the 2019 International Cooperative Day (#Coopsday) was chosen to support the goal of sustainable development # 8 "Inclusive development and decent work".

As companies focused on people and key players in development (European Consensus on Development, 2017), cooperatives have an important role to play in creating decent jobs and in the social and economic emancipation of local communities. The second principle of international cooperation, "Democratic control of members", allows communities to own and govern cooperatives together through democratic control that leads to inclusive and sustainable growth, without leaving anyone behind.

In Italy we announce the concert of The Liberation Project, organized by Legacoop Estense and the associated cooperatives, as part of the "Friendship and Solidarity" 2019 tour promoted by BPM Concerti.

Tuesday, July 9th on the Spazio Grisù stage in Ferrara will be the first European stop, bringing a message of freedom and conciliation through the songs and music that inspired the liberation struggles in Italy, Cuba and South Africa.

With The Liberation Project 6 South African musicians will perform on stage, including Dan Chiorboli, along with Phil Manzanera (Roxy Music & Pink Floyd), Cisco Bellotti (Modena City Ramblers), Roberto Formignani (The Bluesmen, as well as president of the School of Music Moderna di Ferrara), N'Faly Kouyate (Afro-Celt Sound System and Peter Gabriel), in a fusion of rock and world music with South African, Italian and Cuban rhythms.
